323/365 a friends and family interview (by request)...

me: Hey Shelby thanks for joing me even though you are not well (she has a nasty cold/flu)

Shelby: wow mom are we on a game show

me: ha ha... there has been a request for a hard hitting Barbara Walters like interview (but no worries, without the tears) with you, my generation Y'er, getting ready to graduate and get out there & set the world on fire, so here we go...

Shelby: oh..I get the whole formal, thanks for joing me, just like a Barbara Walters interview...maybe I should get my own reality show but not like Paris Hilton.

me: ok you ready...

Shelby: ah yeah (said in that perfect 17 year old sarcastic tone that screams... ah duh, I'm sitting here looking at you) I am ready to get this party started as we are going to dance all night (singing with a little chair dancing, the cold medicine has kicked in)

what do you think is the biggest issue in our society today? we have so many, I would like to say the war, that seems to be a big thing but I think if people could just stop being mean to each other, we need to be like hippies and just all get along. I also think if we didn't lie to each other, you know just totally telling the truth...it would be so much better - everyone is always trying to please each other, and not hurt feelings but if you are just honest to people it would solve a lot of issues

How can we create change? ummm...for what, like everything in the world...ok for starts no more lies, be ourselves....we also need to stop analyzing skinny people thinking that is the way we have to look.

How will you personally create the change you want to see in the world? I will always treat people kindly, I will not idoize people like Britney Spears but people who are real and I will be myself and continue to make my mistakes...that is what we do...make bad choices and then learn from them

If there was anyone that that you could have dinner with (alive or dead), who would it be? Audrey Hepburn but there is just so many people I want to meet, I would love to have dinner with the Tragically Hip because they seem like they would be so funny. I also like having dinner with you and dad.

Do you have a mentor? and if so who is it? ummmm, any person, a woman who is strong, edgy and goes her own path, any one in my life that impacts me - I don't have just have one person...there are many different people, like you, who always support me, especially when dealing with mean friends.

What is the most important quality that people in your life need to have? they need to be at least nice, at least to me...they have to be funny - they need to make me laugh - as long as they are nice, treat me well and make me laugh then I want them in my life - I don't have time for drama

What do you think is a negative charasteric of your generation? that we think it is ok to text while working, it drives me crazy - if you are at work you should be working - I want to prove to people in your generation that we are not lazy. Also, it seems that if someone tells us we can't do anything, we believe them and don't even bother trying. It seems we only thrive if we have tons of encouragment - and can't just do it ourselves. Where, I thrive on negativity, like "you can't do this" and then proving them wrong

So you are saying your generation needs more tough love? yes..in some spots. Sure sometimes we need encouragment but sometimes we need to be told suck it up and get it done.

You mentioned that you think my generation (the older crowd) think you guys are lazy? is it a true assesmnet or perhaps our expecations are just too high? I think it's in the middle, we are perhaps too tech reliant and maybe are a bit lazy but I think you guys lump us all together, I had to do a whole CALM class at school on why your generation thinks we are lazy.

What do you think is a postivie about your generation? that we are open to more cultures - we are not so closed minded - it doesn't bug us if people are gays or lesbians, we are more accepting and open to change - that is why the USA has a black president, the younger generation is open to change.

Do you think the world is a good place? ummm, generally yeah I like my life, I like the world..but I wouldn't say it is a GREAT place, we have people starving, we have murder, we have bullying, we have people starving themselves as they feel they need to meet an unrealistic expectation of what skinny is, little girls are growing way too fast - with all that we can't say the world is great but we do have a postivie side, we have love, we have different cultures, we are growing as a society, we unite to change things, we are becoming a stronger society - everything has a good and bad - you can't have a great world without bad and good things - oh yeah we have diseases as well - put that in the bad things.

If you had a magic wand and could change just one thing in your world what would it be? hmmm...ummm...I don't think I would change anything. I think the good and the bad are needed, it is what it is. I wish perhaps I had a closer girlfriend but I mean I guess I can change that.

Staying with the whole magic wand thing...what would you change in the world? well, I would like diseases to stop and the war to stop but I don't think that will happen...if I learnt anything in social class it would be that.

So you don't think there is such a thing as world peace? to a certain degree, I think we can all get along, but I think it is our nature to have conflict. We have to argue and battle it out to get the good. When you argue with someone, you work things out and it gets resolved.

What is your one piece of advice for someone younger, for instance, a 9 year old girl? to not grow up too fast, enjoy little girl things, like cinderalla

me: Do you think you are a role model?

Shelby: no, I would like to be...I guess somewhat, I make mistakes and am not perfect but I would like to think that I am a good person - I would tell someone younger to go out and try things, make mistakes...ok, I guess I am one, maybe I don't feel like one, but I think I am and I hope that a little girl will look up to me one day

gee mom that was a really hard question, why did you have to get so deep. Do YOU think I am a role model mom? I guess I am when you look at my school struggles and working for what you want.

Me: I think you are, especially for your brother. I also think that you are a great representative for your generation as you want to work hard and be a postive contributer to society and believe that the world can be a good place.

Shelby: of course the world can be a good place we just have to work on it.

I am a good role model as long as you don't tell the kids I like Sex in the City as that is NOT very role modelish.

me: one last question

Shelby: Ok let's hear it. If you could have any pair of shoes...

me: well not really what I was thinking but since you brought it up, what is your dream shoes?

Shelby: I would love a pair of "make your own converse". I would also like a high heeled pair of sparkly girly shoes.

me: What do you want to be remembered for?

are you paying attention to me (as she is busy texting, good thing she isn't working : )

Shelby: ahh yeah (that "duh" tone of voice again)...I am a multi tasker!

Me: ok...back to my question

Shelby: I'm listening (you guessed it... same adorable tone of voice again)

Me: I already asked it

Shelby: What?

me: so you really weren't listening?

Shelby: you never asked one...what is it?

me: ok...What to you want to be remembered for?

Shelby: you never asked that...I interrupted you about shoes...

but it would be being a good mom and wife, and being the best person I can be. I am sure when I grow up I will have more things I want to be.

anything else you want to say? (mischievous grin, smile, evil glint in her eyes) nope...ok, maybe just that everyone should read Sarah Dessen books - they are cute girly romantic books that make me smile...as boys sure don't do what they say in her books, it's fun to read and escape!

this is an actual FRIENDS and FAMILY THURSDAY interview...

what, what? yep, found myself a house guest who happens to be a family member on a Thursday

You just have to love it when it all comes together.

This is Tracey...
she is my brother's girlfriend and they are down from way WAY WAY up north in Fairview for a (belated) Thanksgiving visit. We (and especially Kaeden) are thrilled to have them stay with us as her son Aidan (who is 5) and Kaeden (yep a tongue twister) love to play together. It is nice for us as the two boys will entertain themselves forever, other than frequent checks to make sure everything and everyone is safe (they are boys and it is Kaeden!) it is a nice break.

Now, I have already sort of done an interview with Tracey as she answered MANY (if not all) of my brother's interview as he was constantly asking her for answers. However, it is nice to get the chance to actually interview her!

I told her not to worry about what she says about Colin as APPARENTLY if there are more than 3 sentences in a blog post he tunes out. Ahh, what a great blog supporter he is.

What is your favourite thing to do? Spend time with Colin, Aidan and knit

What is your least favourite thing to do? This is bad…pick up Sam’s (their dog) poop

What was the last film you saw at the theater? Transformers…no…what was it? District 9

What is your favorite TV show? Umm Glee, what not to wear, Cougar town, say yes to the dress

Colin: You have to watch Dee Ann as she types every word you say, like look she is typing that I just said that

What do you want to be when you grow up? A writer

What food do you dislike? That’s a hard one, as I like just about everything... head cheese, I had come up with something…well that came out of left field

What is your favorite song at the moment? I know you want me by Pit Bull

Favorite item of clothing? Ummm that is a hard one, I think it is my hand knit sweaters

If you could go anywhere in the world on vacation, where would you go? Italy

Favorite sport to watch? (the usual girl scared look and then...) curling

Are you a morning person or a night person? (Colin whispers neither) what did you say Colin? (sheepishly he says "neither) Oh well that’s true. I am a 10am person, that’s when I really come to life

What is your favorite candy? I like Lindt chocolate

What is your favorite flower? Gerbera (daisy)

If you were a crayon, what color would you be? green

Me: At least she is answering these questions by herself, unlike someone else I know…

Favorite restaurant? I would say…I like, what is it called? The Sawmill, I also like the Café Deville (in Edmonton)

What are you afraid of? hmmm I would say loss of employment

Favorite day of the week? Thursday (Shelby: that is a random day, why?) It’s just a random day, I don't know... I have always just liked Thursdays

Favourite Memory of last year? Meeting Colin (as only a big sister can, I go into a fit of gagging/chocking noises)

What makes you happy? Colin and Aidan

What makes you sad? Not enough time off work

What story/memory will you tell your grandchildren about? I guess times at my parents fishing camps

Describe yourself in one word. Oh that’s a hard one.. well Colin described me in one word the other day…what was it..what was that argument we were having…I said argumentative and Colin said Passionate, no maybe the word was intense, we were talking about work and I said, maybe I am too intense and Colin said no, just passionate.

Ever since I announced that F&FT interview weren't necessarily going to fall on Thursdays due to how hard it was to find people I have done a pretty good job of landing an interview each Thursday.

I think it may be that it has finally come to the point 

where my friends and family are realizing

What is your favourite thing to do? bake or make cards

What is your least favourite thing to do? Clean the house

What was the last film you saw at the theater.? I don’t remember...the last one we tried to see was Star Trek..lined up a great babysitter (that would be Shelby), went and lined up and couldn’t get in…I can’t remember the last one I have seen...Shelby might remember...

What is your favorite TV show? Gilmore Girls…if we are talking current, I like NCIS, The Listener, The Philanthropist and Grey’s Anatomy

What do you want to be when you grow up? Ummmm…a combination of my mother and your mother

What food do you dislike? Mushrooms…fungus grown in poop (sounds like someone else I know, hey Miranda)

What is your favorite song at the moment? Ummm...the river by Garth Brooks – that has been my favourite for ever and I sing it as a lullaby to McKenzie, and she actually doesn't mind my singing

Favorite item of clothing? Ummm…anything I haven't  bought yet…I really like to shop. I am really into jewellery right now – not sure if that counts (heck yeah, jewellery, shoes and purses will always count)

If you could go anywhere in the world on vacation, where would you go? Can I have a list...Hawaii, I want to go back to Europe, specifically Spain , I lived there for a year, and to Greece, back to London, since grade 3 Machu Picchu, Peru and ummm there is probably a hundred more but this is what came to mind first…the short list

Favorite sport to watch?  silence…. Kaeden suggests I pass. Live, I will watch anything. If we are talking tv, curling or hockey as my husband will be watching it and we only have one tv

Are you a morning person or a night person? Ummm…I am becoming more of a morning person thanks to McKenzie, historically I am  an evening person but self preservation is making me a morning person

What is your favorite candy? Ahh sour soothers or the little gummi dinosaurs

What is your favorite flower? Ummm..any flower. I love them all, more so wild flowers than other pretentious flowers, like roses 

If you were a crayon, what color would you be? I would be kelly green

If you were candy, what would you be? A jolly rancher

Favorite drink? Ummm a Starbucks Awake tea misto or a steeped tea from Tim's

Favorite restaurant? That pub you recommended... Muldoons

What are you afraid of ? landing (what? ) well it's not the heights, it's not the falling – it is the landing (loved this answer, it is one of my favourites)

Favorite day of the week? Ummmm Friday Nights or Saturday if I had to pick a whole day

Favourite Memory of last year?  There are so many as Mckenzie had so many firsts – it will have something to do with her , well Kaeden advises me the best time was Christmas…even going back to work was a pretty good memory – I love my job

What makes you happy? I know it’s a popular answer but my family, sunny days, gardening, crafts, your family

What makes you sad? Cruelty to children, the news

What story/memory will you tell your grandchildren about? Living in Spain for a year, ummm that is probably the biggest memory so far

Kaeden:  What is your favourite Disneyland character...ooh wait I have another one, what is your favourite ride?

my favourite character is...Winnie the Pooh, and my favourite rides are  Peter Pan and the Winnie the Pooh one that you(Kaeden)made us ride over and over and over (I think about 10-12 times)

Shelby: What was your favourite piece of clothing or accessory in the 80's?

ooh that is a good one, my lucky scrunchie of course...and my black stirrup pants...gosh I wore all of that tacky stuff...I also loved this plaid dress I got for Christmas from my parents one year. It was from Le Chateau at a time where all of our clothes were bought at Sears and my big act of rebellion back then was wanting to shop at all the "cool" stores and not Sears - I was so happy when I opened that dress from Le Chateau, I wore it all the time, probably past when it was still in style

Kaeden: What is your favourite cd? 

recently my new coldplay cd that I got free at the concert, it has songs recorded live including a great rendition of  Clocks but I also enjoy singing and listening to Snacktime (by the Barenaked Ladies) with you in the car.

Shelby:  What has been your all time favourite concert?

well until very recently it would have been a tie between Garth Brooks, Billy Joel or when we saw Tragically Hip at Mac Hall(a really small venue) but now it is definitely , by far the Coldplay concert I saw last month

Kaeden: What is your favourite day of the week?

any day I spend with you guys

Shelby: Do you like Sunny Days or Rainy Days or I guess Snowy days? 

well it doesn't really matter, because you can enjoy all 3 types in a span of one hour in this city

Kaeden: If you were an inventor what would you invent? 

a self cleaning house

Shelby:  What would you rather play, Guitar Hero, Sing Star 80's or Sing Star Abba? 

that is a very tough one as I love them all, but I would have to say that Abba will win out each and every time because that is "the name of the game"

Kaeden: What is your favourite slurpee type? 

Dr. Pepper is my absolute favourite, but hard to find, so usually I will make a root beer, cream soda and sprite combo

Shelby: Who would you love to meet and have an interview with? 

I would say Barack Obama for sure...I think it would be inspirational and I would love to get his true unedited answers to some of the very tough questions  facing our society as a whole (not just the USA) - umm I would also love 10 minutes with Chris Martin, as I think he would be intriguing but also I would challenge him to a Sing Star Battle and would kick his arse....ha ha ha 

Kaeden: What is your favourite animal? 

a penguin

Shelby: If you could raid any person's closet, whose would you raid? 

that is a great question, well my friend Charmaine has a closet to die for but I would also need a way different body for that, this is a hard one...I love clothes, I guess anyone who has a little bit of everything, including great shoes and purses

Kaeden: Who is your favourite person to boss around? 

I would have to say Kaeden (Kaeden is chanting: please say Shelby, please say Shelby, please say Shelby, please say Shelby...ahhh shucks I see my name written)

Shelby: What is your favourite book? 

I love books..when I was younger, anything by Judy Blume or Dr. Suess...now I have a very diverse eclectic collection...it is way to hard to pick just one.  Right now I am loving "The Five People you Meet in Heaven" but would also recomend "The Auducity of Hope" by Barack Obama, "Good in Bed" by Jennifer Weiner and "The Last Lecture"

Kaeden: What is your favoruite video game? 

Brain Age on my Ninentdo and Singstar, Guitar Hero and Rockband on the Playstation and I am addicted to the paper toss game on your dad's i-touch

Shelby: What is your favourite movie line?

204/365 we are on a roll with Friends and Family Thursdays

when oh when will my friends learn...

Megan ASKED me to lunch today, 

on a THURSDAY

HELLO...did she really think she could escape this? 

she knew deep down in was just a matter of time

so she gave in (ha, like she REALLY ever had a choice)

and Meg, Miranda I grabbed some lunch and headed over to the park.

Meg and I go back a few years (10+ years)

we met at a prior company and I was the one that convinced

her to come to our current company.

She lives in the same general area and 

up to her going on maternity leave  last year & 

Kaeden going to school

we car pooled downtown every day.

I am actually kind of surprised she still had a child after those "adventures", 

I am sure she has some doozy stories to tell and 

took her share of tyenol

but it also allowed for some good memories

and maybe she was able to pick up some parenting tips

(some, this may work and I am sure a big dose of whoa...not sure that is a good idea, like my classic...if the child is screaming/whining for no apparent reason ( you have checked off all the usual culprits - hungry, hot, hurt, tired etc...), turn up the radio until you can no longer hear them...I am sure that is not found in any "how to" parenting books but it kept me sane)

It is funny, while I am writing this, I am having a difficult time explaining our relationship..all the ways we know each other, how we are connected etc... She has just always been there over the last 10 years... work, mutual friends, community events, play dates etc... it just makes sense, we don't really work on it (ok well at least from my end, she may think I am a high needs friend) we don't spend a lot of time outside of work together (for that matter, there are days I barely see her at work) or talk on the phone  but yet we can pick up where we left off without missing a beat and we both know if we truly needed a friend we would be there for each other without hesitation.

What is your favourite thing to do? family time (Miranda and I were pretty sure the real answer was "spending lunch with us" Meg's reply..."so funny"...I guess we will take that as a no)

What is your least favourite thing to do? clean bathrooms

What was the last film you saw at the theater? ohhh...that was a very long time ago, we don't have time for movies anymore...Pirates of the Caribbean...wait, no I went to the Sex and City with you and Starr

What is your favorite TV show? I love TV, how do you pick just one...How I Met your Mother or Criminal Minds

What do you want to be when you grow up? ummm, I don't know, something not in insurance (our current occupation)

What food do you dislike? (the peanut gallery says... Beef)  right, I don't eat beef

What is your favorite song at the moment? by that Hootie guy (Peanut Gallery...Darius Rucker) yeah, that's it...just not sure what the song is called

Favorite item of clothing? in the summer, I have this oversized flowy, summer skirt from H&M & in the winter, probably my lululemons

If you could go anywhere in the world on vacation, where would you go? Greece

Favorite sport to watch? Football..NFL, not CFL (as a side note she is also a big fan of British Football - we know it as Soccer)

Are you a morning person or a night person?  a morning person... once I am out of bed, it's the getting up part I struggle with

What is your favorite candy? hmmm...winegums (Peanut Gallery: we should go get some, I can eat them now)

What is your favorite flower? it used to be daisies but I have developed expensive taste...so sunflowers or roses

If you were a crayon, what color would you be? violet (this is a first, such a specific colour, usually I get red, pink, yellow as answers) well it's because Peyton(her 19 month old daughter) colours in restaurants so I read all the colours...remember, it's like when you were a kid with that box of 180 with the built in sharpener...I liked the sharpener, made the smoothest pointiest crayons, and you had to remember what exact colour you were using as there were so many.

If you were candy, what would you be? what a strange question (ummm, really? you think this is the only "Strange" question) Starburst

Favorite drink? it's kind of tough as you have a favourite Starbucks, favourite alcoholic, favourite other drink like pop etc...(so I decided to break it down for her)

Starbucks: Earl Grey Tea Misto

Alcoholic: Red Wine, most of the time

Other drink: Snapples Strawberry Kiwi

Favorite restaurant? Parthenon (a local Greek restaurant)

What are you afraid of ? Kidnappers...kind of a parenty answer...but I worry with it being so hot out & having the windows open that someone will come in and take her

Favorite day of the week? Fun Fridays...I have the day off work (Meg and Peyton were regular attendees of Fun Monday's back in the day before the group went back to work or moved away)

Favourite Memory of last year? St. Martin in November

What makes you happy? when Darren (her husband) does the dishes

What makes you sad? (Peanut Gallery...when Darren doesn't do the dishes)...I don't know, the news, it is hard to watch the news

What story/memory will you tell your grandchildren about? That's hard...probably, what a great mom I was as you know your own children (their mom) won't admit how good you were...it will be like, my parents never let me get away with that...

I was on my way
to corner my dad or my brother in law for tonight’s interview
but first stopped at Starbucks to see my mom, Shelby & Matt
and low and behold, Lisa and her daughter McKenzie were there.
I hadn't interviewed either of them so it was very good news for me.

I decided to go with interviewing McKenzie tonight,
and as she is only 19 months and her vocabulary,
even though it is awesome for her age,
is limited to up, down, puppy and a few others
which may not make for a very long interview
her mom (Lisa) helped me with the questions.

I do apologize to my mom as she had asked Shelby and Matt
for a nice visit to give Shelby her birthday gift
and I crashed the get together and furthermore
blew in like a tornado and took over the visit.

What is her favourite thing to do? I would like to say play and colour but I really think it is eating…anything you put in front of her, vegetables above all else

What is her least favourite thing to do? Have her hair washed or her teeth brushed

What was the last film she saw at the theater? Ha ha ha ha ha… sorry, I haven’t attempted that yet

What is her favorite TV show? Pocoyko

What do you think she will be when she grows up? Happy - her mommy wants her to be happy…what does she want to be? she likes to see if you are ok…so I will say a doctor

What food does she dislike? Grapes…I think that is it..she loves lemon, dill pickles, olives, mushrooms…all kind of foods you wouldn’t associate with kids..she wasn’t too keen on peanut butter and jam last week

What is her favorite song at the moment? I don’t know if she has one, she likes itsy bitsy spider, doing the actions, she likes to do a dance party – thanks to Shelby she dances to any song

Favorite item of clothing? Really nothing – she likes to be naked, the more nude the better

If she could go anywhere in the world on vacation, where would she go? Grandma and Grandpa Cucheron’s house

Favorite sport to watch ? hockey (ahh that’s my girl, training them young!)

Is she a morning person or a night person? Ha ha she likes to wake up at 3am and play with the animals in her cribs, I guess that makes her a morning person

What is her favorite candy? Ummm… the only candy she is allowed is the 100% all fruit snacks, I am not sure what they are called.

What is her favorite flower? Anything that has a scent

Favorite drink? Milk with yogurt - we add some of her yogurt to her milk and it makes a little milkshake which she loves

Favorite restaurant? Anyone she has tried. She has been to lots, she loves to eat out, as people pay attention to her.

What is she afraid of ? it depends on the day…honestly I don’t know, she doesn’t a any real fears – we think she will love rides as she likes to turn herself in circles to make herself dizzy. She just has no fear, will try anything on her own, very independent.

Favorite day of the week? Saturday or Sunday as both of her parents are around.

Favourite Memory of last year? She went to grandma and grandpa, got some teeth…it was a very big year for her, learned how to eat, learned how to walk – it was a good year.

What makes her happy? Food…if she is miserable we give her food and she is happy – and showing off, she loves to show off and get attention

What makes her sad? Not a lot

What story/memory will you tell your grandchildren about Mckenzie? Umm yeah… I’ll tell my grandchildren what a good baby their mom was and what a goofball she was and that she had a thing for black men, if we go into my work, she always runs right to them and asks for hugs
