in loving memory

of a dear family member

Diti
October 1999 - August 5, 2010
this week was a very difficult one
for our family,
even though we knew this day was coming
it did not take the deep heartache out of one
of the hardest decisions a pet owner faces.

Diti (short for Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love
as she was an anniversary gift to each other)
had been with us for 10+ years and
anyone who had the luck to meet her
or who have followed her shenanigans
through my blog,
know that she was a unique personality.

We hesitated to call her a dog,
she was always a bit of an embarrassment to her breed
as she really was more of a cat then
a rottweiler.

Quick movement was never her strong point
and napping may have been her favourite past time.

However, she could be a strong personality
when we had younger pups as guests she
was always quick to show them who was the boss
and she was definitely the queen sheba at the lake.

She was a great dog.

It may sound like a country music song
but it is the simple truth.

She made us smile,
she was loving
never judged
& in her unexcited way,
was always happy to see us

and she never...
ate a shoe
wrecked a couch,
barked,
dug a hole in the backyard
hurt anyone
destroyed blinds
ran crazily around the house

but she did like to...

eat stolen carbs (LOVED bread from the counter)

help herself to the garbage (when the lid was left off)

sit on the couch (especially when she was not allowed)

cuddle up with Scott in the bed (thus not allowing me any room)

snuggle up to me every time I had my hair cut (must have been the product Chris, my hairdresser used but without fail, she would hop into bed and sniff/nuzzle my hair every time)

sit next to Scott so her head would be right under his hand (for a pet or two)

back her bum into your hands so you would rub her hindquarters (and she would wiggle her little stump of a tail)

give a little growl and a wiggle of her butt to greet you

let the other dogs run and grab the ball/stick
wait for them to come back,
smack her paw on their nose so they would drop it
grab it in her mouth and prance
around proud as a peach that she had the ball/stick.

Her favourite place lately was the lake,
she was her happiest laying in the shade
on her bean bag chair.

We had hoped she would make it through the summer
but the last few weeks were not kind to her
and we were concerned about how comfortable she was.

After a consultation with the vet
it was decided it would be best to
let her go peacefully

and after all she has given this family
it was the least we could do for her.

This morning at our traditional Sunday group breakfast
at the lake where the highlight for the dogs is enjoying
one of Nicole's awesome pancakes
Kaeden suggested we have a moment of silence for Diti

He held her pancake,
we had a moment
and then he split it in half and
gave half to Jack and the other to Jasper.

Rest in peace Diti
you will be missed by many.

I'm so sorry for your loss Dee-Ann, Scott, Shelby and Kaeden...I know what a hard decision it is to make. There will never be another Diti, but the memories of her will last forever. Thinking of you all...

I am so sorry - I am about to cry after reading that. It is amazing how much an animal becomes a member of the family.

So sorry about Diti. Her quirky personality made her one of a kind and will long be remembered by anyone who ever met her...even a few times.

Your blog was beautiful, Dee. I am sitting at my desk shedding a tear for all of you. She was a beautiful animal, and I know how hard this decision was for your family. CI

Very nicely said. I know that Diti was part of many enjoyable memories that you will all carry with you. I did enjoy hearing about all her silly antics and my thoughts are with your family.

So sorry to hear about your pup - we understand how you feel as we had to do the same last year. Pets become a part of the family & are dearly missed when they are gone.
Take care,

Lori
